Gov. Gregoire encourages Washingtonians to help China earthquake victims

For Immediate Release: May 12, 2008

OLYMPIA Gov. Christine Gregoire is urging Washingtonians to open their hearts and wallets to help in the aftermath of an earthquake Monday that killed and injured thousands of people in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

Time and time again, Washingtonians have responded to those in need, whether they live in Lewis County or another country, Gregoire said. I urge folks to consider whether they are able to give and to do so with an international relief agency they trust so that their contributions bring the greatest value to those who are truly hurting.

Washington has enjoyed a sister state relationship with Sichuan since 1982, when Gov. John Spellman created the arrangement that has brought business, cultural and educational benefits to both.

The governor has sent a letter of condolence to the governor of Sichuan.

Last year, I had the honor of hosting a delegation from Sichuan on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of our sister-state relationship, Gregoire said. Even though the earthquake victims are half a world away, they are also our neighbors.
