Gov. Gregoire announces boards and commissions appointments

OLYMPIA � Gov. Chris Gregoire today announced appointments to the following boards and commissions:

Affordable Housing Advisory Board
Joseph Ingram
of Bothell has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 14, 2008, ending Jan. 26, 2012. Ingram is the executive director of Vets Edge, a non-profit publication for homeless veterans. He currently is a member of the Balance of State Continuum of Care Steering Committee and the State Advisory Council of Homelessness, and co-chair of the Washington Co-Occurring Disorder Policy Team.

The board serves as principal advisory body to the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development on housing and housing-related issues.

Agency Council on Coordinated Transportation
Jenny Bullard
of Vancouver has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 14, 2008, ending June 30, 2010. Bullard is the transportation coordinator for the Evergreen School District. She was previously employed by the Vancouver School District for more than 16 years in the transportation department, and has been a member of the Washington Association for Pupil Transportation since September 2007.

Richard DeRock of Wenatchee has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 21, 2008, ending June 30, 2010. DeRock is the general manager for Link Transit. He previously served as chair of the Wenatchee Valley Transportation Council, president of the American Public Transit Association and vice president of the Washington State Transit Association.

The council develops standards and strategies for coordinating transportation for individuals with special needs.

Capitol Furnishings Preservation Committee
Ken Jones
of Tenino has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 14, 2008, ending Sept. 1, 2010. Jones is mayor of the city of Tenino and chair of the Thurston Regional Planning Council.

The committee promotes and encourages the recovery and preservation of the original and historic furnishings of the Washington State Capitol Group, prevents loss of historic furnishings, and reviews and advises remodeling and restoration projects as they pertain to historic furnishings.

Dissolution Proceeding Task Force
Kelly O�Connell
of Seattle has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 21, 2008, ending June 30, 2009. O�Connell is a staff attorney with the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs. Previously, she was a pro bono attorney with Eastside Legal Assistance Program, advocating for domestic violence survivors.

The task force develops dispute resolution procedures in conjunction with the Office of Crime Victims Advocacy; sexual assault training curriculum; standards for parenting evaluators; and a domestic violence training curriculum for individuals making evaluations in dissolution cases.

Emergency Medical Service/Trauma Care Steering Committee
Kathy Turner
of Puyallup has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 21, 2008, ending Aug. 15, 2010. Turner is a councilmember with the city of Puyallup, and served two terms as mayor from 2002 through 2005. She serves on the Puyallup Farmer�s Market Advisory Committee, Memorial and Veteran�s Day committees, board of directors of the Association of Washington Cities, Puyallup Tribe Community Contribution Committee and Pierce County 2060 Housing Funding Committee.

The committee reviews the requirements for pre-hospital emergency and ambulance services throughout the state and proposed administrative rules relating to emergency medical services; reviews regional emergency management plans and recommends changes; and advises on rules for poison information centers.

The Evergreen State College Board of Trustees
Alexandra Valin
of Olympia has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 12, 2008, ending June 30, 2008. Valin will serve as the student trustee. She is currently in her sophomore year, with academic interests in literature, languages, history and social studies. She will graduate in 2010.

The board of trustees is the governing body for The Evergreen State College.

Governor�s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board
Corwyn Fischer
of Cashmere has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 19, 2008, ending Dec. 31, 2008. Fischer is safety director for the Washington Farm Bureau. He is a member of the American Farm Bureau National Safety and Health Network, Evergreen Safety Council and the Safety Conference Agriculture Panel.

The board is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to prevent industrial injuries and occupational diseases among employees in the state. It promotes the efficient, safe, healthful and productive operation of industry in Washington. The board functions in an advisory capacity to the governor.

Interagency Committee of State Employed Women
Jewel Cervantes
of Olympia has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 26, 2008, ending June 30, 2008. Cervantes is an executive receptionist with the Office of the Governor. Previously, she was an office assistant with the Office of Administrative Hearings.

The committee examines and defines issues pertaining to the rights and needs of women employed in state government. It makes recommendations to the governor and state agencies on desirable changes in program and law, especially in the areas of education, training, career development and other conditions of employment.

Marine Employees� Commission
Patricia Warren
of Renton has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 21, 2008, ending June 15, 2011. Warren is a senior business agent with Teamsters Local 174. Previously, she was a field examiner with the National Labor Relations Board.

The commission adjusts all complaints, grievances and disputes between labor and management arising out of the operation of the ferry system; provides for impasse mediation; conducts fact-finding and provides salary surveys; and provides for the selection of impartial arbitrators.

Municipal Research Council
Mike Doherty
of Port Angeles has been reappointed to a term effective Feb. 13, 2008, ending July 31, 2010. Doherty is a Clallam County commissioner. He is chair of the Olympic Resource Advisory Committee, member of the Medic One Board, volunteer firefighter and volunteer youth sports coach.

Donald Gerend of Sammamish has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 12, 2008, ending July 31, 2010. Gerend is a city councilmember and deputy mayor for the city of Sammamish. He is a former rocket scientist at The Boeing Company, former professor of astronomy and physics at the University of Washington, and member of the Puget Sound Regional Council.

Jim Haggerton of Tukwila has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 12, 2008, ending July 31, 2010. Haggerton is mayor of the city of Tukwila. He is a member of the board of directors for the Association of Washington Cities, board member and treasurer for Cascade Water Alliance and chair of the Policy Committee for Information Technology and Communications Steering Committee.

Barbara Harrer of Yakima has been reappointed to a term effective Feb. 14, 2008, ending July 31, 2010. Harrer is mayor of the town of Harrah. She is vice chair of the Yakima Health District Board, served 41 years as a 4-H club leader and received the Washington State 4-H Leader of the Year Award in 2003.

Theodore Hikel of Lynnwood has been reappointed to a term effective Feb. 12, 2008, ending July 31, 2010. Hikel retired after a 25-year career with Nordstrom. He is a Lynnwood City Council member, Association of Washington Cities board member and Community Transit Board former member.

Thomas Moak of Kennewick has been reappointed to a term effective Feb. 12, 2008, ending July 31, 2010. Moak is branch manager for Mid-Columbia Library. He is a member of the Kennewick City Council, vice chair of Benton-Franklin Community Action Committee, past president of the Association of Washington Cities and previous member of the Affordable House Advisory Board.

Richard Munson of Spokane Valley has been reappointed to a term effective Feb. 12, 2008, ending July 31, 2010. Munson is mayor of the city of Spokane Valley. He is president of the Association of Washington Cities and member of its Resolutions and Policy committees.

The council assures that Washington cities and towns have a comprehensive research and service program.

Rehabilitation Council for the Blind
Edna Harper
of Bellingham has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 11, 2008, ending Sept. 13, 2011. Harper is director of the Lummi Vocational Rehabilitation Program. She is a Lummi tribal member and has more than 40 years of work experience coordinating such programs as Lummi Children�s Services. Harper also has experience as a medical social worker.

The council advises the director of the Department of Services for the Blind.

Walla Walla Community College Board of Trustees
Miguel Sanchez
of College Place has been appointed to a term effective Feb. 21, 2008, ending Sept. 30, 2012. Sanchez is a detective with the Walla Walla Police Department and a retired first sergeant from the U.S. Army. He works with domestic violence victims and the Walla Walla and Umatilla Farm Labor camps, and teaches driver education to Hispanic adults.

The board of trustees is the governing board for the community college district.
