Washington Adjutant General Voted President of Governors� Homeland Security Advisors Council

Council brings together state homeland security leaders

WASHINGTON, D.C. � Major General Timothy J. Lowenberg was elected President of the Governors� Homeland Security Advisors Council, an advisory organization to the National Governors� Association (NGA). The council, led by a bipartisan eight-member executive committee, meets twice yearly and conducts regular conference calls and host online forums.
�When it comes to protecting our citizens, I believe it is important for those who lead local homeland security efforts to work together and share best practices,� said Governor Gregoire. �I am especially pleased that Washington state�s leader in these efforts, Major General Lowenberg, will serve as the President of the Homeland Security Advisors Council.�

The National Governors� Association Center for Best Practices created the Governors� Homeland Security Advisors Council as a forum to bring together the 55 advisors appointed by the governors of each state and territory to share common concerns and develop strategies for managing homeland security threats.

Objectives of the Governors� Homeland Security Advisors Council include:

  • improving cross-state and regional communications;

  • assisting communications between state and federal agencies;

  • identifying and setting priorities;

  • developing a unified state and territorial voice to inform governors of the impacts of federal homeland security legislation, regulations and policies on the states; and

  • informing the work of the NGA Center by sharing ideas and best practices, identifying emerging issues and reviewing and analyzing the impact of federal homeland security activities.


Major General Lowenberg is currently the Adjutant General of the Washington Military Department and additionally serves as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee for the Adjutants General of United States Association and as Homeland Security Advisor to Governor Gregoire.

The Washington Military Department encompasses the Washington National Guard. When called on, our state�s citizen soldiers respond to state emergencies by providing military assistance to civil authorities. Numerous members of the Washington National Guard have also served in Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
