Statement from Governor Gregoire Regarding Mayor Nickels' Letter on Key Arena Funding

For Immediate Release: April 24, 2006

�During the legislative session I called together people from both houses and both political parties, along with representatives of the Sonics, the city of Seattle and King County to discuss possible solutions for Key Arena.

�We were unable to arrive at solutions because the city and the Sonics had not negotiated an agreement on the details of the arrangement for the rehabilitation and operation of Key Arena and the revenues needed to accomplish these tasks.

�That situation has not changed.

�I have no interest in committing what amounts to a blank check for this project until the city and the Sonics agree on what we may or may not be buying. The Legislature will be in session next January so there is plenty of time for the city to engage in �reasonable efforts� to retain the Sonics and maintain the vibrancy of Seattle Center.

�I look forward to working toward responsible solutions to this vexing problem.�
