Governor Gregoire praises Seattle City Council for introducing resolution to move SR 99 bored tunnel forward

For Immediate Release: July 26, 2010

OLYMPIA - Gov. Chris Gregoire today issued the following statement praising Seattle City Council members as they introduced legislation to endorse draft agreements for the proposed bored tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The Councils legislation would allow WSDOT to forward the agreements to the design-build teams preparing bored tunnel proposals, which will be submitted this fall. The Council expects to approve the agreements when WSDOT awards the contract early next year:

This project is critical to the states economy and transportation infrastructure. The Seattle City Council, as partners in this project, understand that after nearly a decade of process, that further delays will cost money, risk our economy and threaten public safety. We are in an unprecedented climate for construction bids which allows us to stretch taxpayer dollars even further. Todays proposed agreements between the city and the state will help us assure that value and will help us continue to move Seattle forward.
