Gov. Gregoire�s statement on planned closure of Arlington boatbuilder

OLYMPIA � Gov. Chris Gregoire issued the following statement on state efforts to assist employees of Meridian Yachts:

�The turbulent national economy continues to affect our state, as unfortunately demonstrated by the closure of the Meridian Yachts, a major employer in northwest Washington. I am saddened to hear that the company will have to close its Arlington facility and lay off hundreds of workers.

�I want those facing layoffs to know that the state�s Employment Security Department and local work force development councils have already deployed our Rapid Response teams to the area. The highest priority is to help these workers find other living-wage jobs as quickly as possible.

�The latest round of layoffs is another sign that the slowing national economy continues to take a toll on Washington state. I remain committed to working with local and congressional leaders to ensure a favorable economic climate for Washington businesses.�
