Gov. Locke appoints to boards and commissions

OLYMPIA - Gov. Locke today announced appointments to several state boards, commissions and councils. Among those appointments are:

Council on Aging

Carl "Bud" Berg of Seabeck was appointed for a second term to the Council. Berg also is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Elks Club. His term expires Sept. 15, 2000.

Phyllis Everest of Spokane also was appointed to a second term with the Council. Everest is a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and has served as president of Spokane Falls Community College. Her term expires Sept. 15, 2000.

Fran J. Polek of Spokane also was appointed to a second term with the Council. He is a retired professor of English at Gonzaga University and was a member of the Hanford Education Action League. His term expires Sept. 15, 2000.

Yukie Yumibe of Tacoma also was appointed to the Council. Yumibe also serves on the Pierce County Aging and Long-term Care Advisory Board and the Pierce County Mental Health Advisory Board. Her term expires Sept. 15, 1999.

Robert S. Allen of Wilson Creek in Grant County also was appointed to the Council. Allen is a retired Air Force officer and currently is a member of the Association of Retired Persons, the Retired Officers Association and the National Society of Tax Professionals. His term expires Sept. 15, 2000.

Glen Hallman of Bellingham also was appointed to a second term on the Council. Hallman also serves on the Whatcom County Council on Aging, the National Council of Senior Citizens, and the American Association of Retired Persons. His term expires Sept. 15, 2000.

The Council advises the governor and the Department of Social and Health Services on policies, programs and services affecting older people.

Governor's Committee on Disability Issues and Employment

Jan Herdman of Seattle was appointed to a second term on this committee. She is a vocational rehabilitation specialist and disability case manager for the University of Washington. She is a member of the National Rehabilitation Association and the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association. Her term expires Dec. 31, 2000.

James F. Morris of Vancouver also was appointed for a second term to the committee. Morris is the executive director of the Southwest Washington Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He also serves on the Washington Association of the Deaf and on Leadership Clark County. His term expires Dec. 31, 2000.

Michael Baird of Kirkland also was appointed to a second term on the committee. He also serves on the Washington State Rehabilitation Advisory Council, the Washington Assistive Technology Alliance and the local chapter of Self-Help for the Hard of Hearing. His term expires Dec. 31, 2000.

Karen Bermudez of Lynnwood also was appointed to a second term on the committee. She manages the Independent Living Service Center, a facility that serves Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, Island and San Juan counties. She is a member of the Washington Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. Her term expires Dec. 31, 2000.

Louis Bunkelman of Othello also was appointed to a second term on the committee. He administered the Othello Community Service Organization. He also served as chair of the Big Bend Community College Literacy Council, served on the Adams County Family Policy Network and the Columbia Basin Health Association Board. His term expires Dec. 31, 2000.

Stephanie Tesch of Pasco also was appointed to a second term on the committee. Her term expires Dec. 31, 2000.

The Governor's Committee on Disability Issues and Employment advises the governor on disability issues, initiates projects to address specific issues, offers training to individuals and organizations, conducts workshops and conferences, and publishes disability-related materials.

In other appointments:

Dr. Douglas Yoshida, J.D., of Mercer Island was appointed to the Medical Quality Assurance Commission. Yoshida is a physician in Everett and practices law. His term expires June 30, 1998.

The commission regulates the competency and quality of medical professionals licensed to practice medicine and surgery by establishing, monitoring and enforcing qualifications for licensing, consistent standards of practice, continuing competency mechanisms and discipline.

Sharon Greenberg of Mercer Island was named to the Board of Occupational Therapy Practice. Greenberg is a member of the faculty of the University of Washington Division of Occupational Therapy, and is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Washington Occupational Therapy Association. Her term expires Dec. 31, 1999.

The board administers, coordinates and enforces the statutes relating to occupational therapists.

Patricia Muchmore of Olympia was named to the Board of Physical Therapy. Her term expires Sept. 18, 2001.

The board examines and disciplines those licensed to practice physical therapy, adopts rules, establishes continuing-education requirements and standards of professional conduct.

Rita Y. Wang of Bellingham was appointed to the Developmental Disabilities Council. She has served on the Washington State Special Education Advisory Council, the Northwest Senior Services Board, the Seattle International District Rotary Club, and the King County Board for Developmental Disabilities. Her term expires June 30, 1999.

The council advises the governor on issues and trends in providing services to developmentally disabled individuals.

Colleen Daniel of Walla Walla was appointed to a second term on the Walla Walla County Boundary Review Board. Daniel is a member of the American Association of University Women, the Washington Agriculture and Forestry Education Foundation and the Center for Holistic Resource Management. Her term expires Jan. 31, 2001.

The board has jurisdiction over municipal annexations, incorporations, and creation of certain special districts.

Mike Carrow of Pasco was named to the Commission on Pesticide Registration. Carrow is the director of agricultural services for Lamb Weston in Richland. He also is a board member of the Fruit and Vegetable Advisory Board for the Washington Department of Agriculture, a member of the National Potato Council, and an agricultural committee member of the Northwest Food Processors. His term expires Sept. 14, 1998.

The commission provides guidance to Washington State University's Food Safety and Environmental Quality Laboratory on pesticide registrations for minor crops and minor uses of pesticides.
