Our K-12 students excel in core skills of reading, writing, math and science. Each child receives the individual attention they need to achieve their full potential. Outstanding teachers lead classrooms full of engaged students, with extensive support from parent and community volunteers. World-class colleges and universities provide excellent education and training opportunities for all Washingtonians. A well prepared workforce with diverse talents and skills fuels Washington’s strong economy.


New state funding has resulted in thousands of new teachers in Washington classrooms. Washington is a national leader in standards-based education reform. We have set high standards for academic achievement for all students, and Washington is at the forefront of providing focused assistance to ensure that all students in every school achieve these standards. The Washington Reading Corps provides thousands of volunteer tutors every year to boost reading achievement in our elementary schools. Students benefit from local safety programs and strong efforts to eliminate bullying and harassment.

Washington has experienced strong growth in higher education enrollment. Two year Washington Promise Scholarships reward high achieving high school students. Washington’s higher education institutions are economic engines preparing students for high demand fields such as information technology, engineering, education, and health care.
