Learn about the documentation of birth records in Washington and what information is found in a birth register or birth return by selecting the tab that says "About this Collection” here The Washington Territorial Legislature created Cowlitz County on April 21, 1854. It was named in honor of the Cowlitz tribe. Cowlitz County was organized from Lewis County and was one of the first counties created by Washington’s first Territorial Legislature. It is named after the river that Lewis and Clark Cow-e-liske or “river of the shifting sand.” It is located in the southwestern part of the state and is bounded on the south by the Columbia River.
