| Introduction |
This collection contains the register used to record enlistment in the National Guard in Washington between 1885 and 1907. The register lists the name, rank, company, regiment, birthplace, age, occupation, residence, and enlistment date for each enlistee. The Military Department was established to protect Washington citizens, and to participate in national defense as necessary. In 1854, the Territorial Legislature first created a Territorial Militia. After Washington became a state, this militia became the National Guard, which is organized, equipped, and federally recognized under the United States National Defense Act. These records are open for research. Original records located at Washington State Archives, Olympia, WA. All records are in English. |
