Washington State School for
the Blind
Owned Facilities by County - 1997-99
Capital Overview
The Washington State School for the Blind is a fully accredited
residential school for blind and partially sighted children who
are Washington State residents. Educational programs, recreational
activities, and on-campus living routines are designed to meet
the needs of each student. The school also serves as a demonstration
and resource center to teachers, parents, and students with visual
disabilities. While the range of visual impairment varies from
totally blind to partially sighted, nearly all students are legally
blind. About 70 percent of the students have one or more other
handicapping conditions in addition to visual impairment.
The campus of the Washington State School for the Blind occupies
11 acres near Clark College and Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver.
The administration, educational, vocational and gymnasium buildings
and five residential cottages (housing 10 to 18 students each)
are surrounded by open fields. An outdoor track, extensive sidewalks,
and playground equipment provide room to play, study, and relax.
The biggest challenges facing the Washington State School for
the Blind capital facilities surround repair and renewal of older
historic buildings and infrastructure, incorporating increased
handicapped accessibility.
Capital Plan Highlights
- Funds are provided for the completion of the seismic stabilization
of the historic Old Main building.
- The capital plan provides for continued preservation of various
buildings on the campus.
