Record Creator: | Munro, Ralph |
Description: | This scrapbook was created for the Washington State Centennial Commission by The Rockey Company in 1989 to commemorate Washington’s Centennial. It was donated to the commission by former Secretary of State and Centennial Co-Chair, Ralph Munro. There are 138 pages in this scrapbook. The cover measures 16 x 14.25 inches, and each page measures 15.75 x 14 inches. The scrapbook includes various items related to the Washington State Centennial including ephemera, invitations, leaflets, newspaper clippings, periodicals, photographs, and posters.
The scrapbook can be browsed page by page. Pages are numbered as they fall in the scrapbook (ex: “p003” is page 3 of the scrapbook). Some pages include overlapping or folded items. In these cases, the pages are imaged so that each item can be seen. Items on a page are named a, b, c, and so on (ex: “p003_a” is item a on page 3 of the scrapbook). Some items include multiple pages, such as brochures, booklets, and periodicals. These items are given an item name, followed by a page number (ex: “p003_a_08” is page 8 of item a on page 3 of the scrapbook). The Washington Centennial Commission was established in 1982 to organize, fund and coordinate events, artworks and publications for the state's centennial celebration in 1989. Financed with state funds of $157 million (primarily raised through a surcharge on "Centennial License Plates") the Commission was headed by Executive Secretary Putnam Barber, and co-chaired by First Lady Jean Gardner and Secretary of State Ralph Munro. Events were coordinated by a number of committees which addressed specialized areas of interest such as the Native American Committee and Maritime Committee. Centennial committees were also established at the county level to coordinate local events. |
