Gov. Locke marks opening of Pierce County WorkSource center

TACOMA – Gov. Gary Locke today marked the official opening of the newest WorkSource center designed to make it easier for employers and job seekers to access workforce services.

“Preparing Washington’s workforce for a rapidly changing economy has been one of my top priorities since I became governor nearly five years ago,” Locke said. “I’m gratified to see another example of how this priority is taking shape.”

Located in Tacoma, the center has been operating since July and already serves more than 5,000 customers each month. Employers can use the center for computer job matching, assistance with recruitment and layoffs and access to electronic resume banks, labor market information and retraining resources. Job seekers can take advantage of free computer use, copiers, telephones and faxes to help them find work. They can tap into job databases, get work referrals and help with placement and attend workshops on how to find and keep a job.

Locke participated in dedication ceremonies for the center with state Employment Security Department Commissioner Sylvia Mundy, Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg, Tacoma Mayor Mike Crowley and Workforce Development Council Chair Cynthia Bush.

“I expect that the WorkSource centers, which represent a remarkable partnership of business, non-profit and government agencies, will play a big role as Washington returns to prosperity in the wake of Boeing layoffs and other impacts that are currently hurting Washington’s economy,” Locke said.

WorkSource is a public-private partnership of business, labor, government and colleges and universities.

“This center is dedicated to a very basic but vital goal – helping to train workers to fill business demand for employees who have the skills necessary to make businesses thrive,” the governor said.

There are more than 50 WorkSource centers and affiliate sites across the state. Workers and businesses can find the nearest WorkSource office by calling 1-877-872-JOBS or by visiting the WorkSource Internet site at www.go2worksource.com.
