Gov. Locke's statement on relief effort for Afghan children

“In his press conference last night, President Bush announced the establishment of ‘America’s Fund for Afghan Children.’ The President called on American children to give one dollar to the fund in order to provide food and medicine for the children of Afghanistan.

“I applaud President Bush’s decision to help these children. It is a great opportunity to show the world America’s unbridled spirit and character. And, as an Eagle Scout, I can think of no greater service project than raising money to aid the innocent children of Afghanistan.

“I have asked my family to contribute to the fund. As I travel to schools across the state in the coming weeks and months for Washington Reading Corps events, I will encourage students to do the same.

“In the meantime, winter is approaching in Afghanistan and we must act now to ease the hardships of the children of Afghanistan. I hope that all Washingtonians will follow the President’s call and give to this fund.

“The President requested that donations be mailed to:

America's Fund for Afghan Children
c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20509-1600

“Thank you.”
