Locke schedules special meeting of Clemency and Pardons Board

OLYMPIA - The Washington State Clemency and Pardons Board has called a special meeting for Monday, August 6, at 9:00 a.m. to allow for orderly handling of any requests for clemency in the case of Mr. James Elledge.

Elledge, a convicted murderer, has waived his appeals and asked the court for an early execution date.

The meeting will take place in Senate Hearing Room 4 in the John A. Cherburg Building at the capitol in Olympia.

In letters to Elledge and the Snohomish County Prosecutor James Krider, Gov. Gary Locke and the board emphasized that the meeting is not a judicial or administrative process, "rather an opportunity for presentations to be made of any circumstances that you or others believe would merit or not merit an act of grace in your case."

In order to give the board an adequate opportunity to review the matter, a filing deadline has been set for noon, on Friday, July 27, 2001 for any paperwork requesting or opposing clemency. The special meeting will be the board's only review of the Elledge case. It will then send its recommendation to the governor.

Elledge is to be put to death on August 28, at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
