Locke announces boards and commissions appointments

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today announced appointments for several boards and commissions.

State Board for Community and Technical Colleges
The board is the governing board for the state's community and technical college system.
  • Erin Mundinger, of Omak, is a job training unit manager with the Employment Security Department. She has been appointed to a term ending April 3, 2004.


Work Force Training and Education Coordinating Board
The board provides planning, coordination, evaluation, monitoring and policy analysis for the state training system.
  • Rene Ewing, of Normandy Park, who works as special assistant to the governor for quality improvement, has been named chair of the board. Her term is at the pleasure of the governor.

  • John McGinnis, of Tacoma, and Donald Brunell, of Olympia, have been reappointed to terms that expire June 30, 2005.


State School for the Blind, Board of Trustees
The board serves the educational needs of visually impaired and blind students from throughout the state.
  • Joseph Fram, of Spokane, has been reappointed to a term ending July 2, 2006.


Affordable Housing Advisory Board
The board serves as the principal advisory body to the Office of Community Development on housing and housing-related issues.
  • Len Brannen, of Bellevue, works for Shelter Resources, Inc. He has been appointed to serve a term ending Jan. 26, 2005.


Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors
The board examines candidates for license or registration.
  • Nancy Miller Duevel, of Renton, has been reappointed to a term ending July 9, 2006.


Community Economic Revitalization Board
The board works to strengthen the economies of areas in the state that have experienced high unemployment or below average economic growth.
  • Jack Pittis, of Port Angeles, principle engineer for Harding Lawson Associates and Miland Walling, of Bickleton, have been appointed to terms ending Sept. 2, 2002.


Conservation Commission
The commission develops and implements a long-range program for conserving and improving the state's renewable natural resources.
  • James Peters, of Shelton, has been reappointed to a term ending June 6, 2005.


Council on Aging
The council advises the governor and Department of Social and Health Services on policies, programs and services affecting older people.
  • Whitman County Auditor David Repp, of Colfax, has been appointed to serve a term ending Sept. 15, 2002.

  • Joe Sampson, Sr., of White Swan, has been appointed to fill the remainder of a term ending Sept. 15, 2001. He will serve an additional term that expires Sept. 15, 2004.


Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect
The mission of the council is to prevent child abuse and neglect.
  • Lolo Arevalo, of Seattle, and Dr. Kyle Yasuda, of Seattle, have been reappointed to terms that end June 30, 2004.


Developmental Disabilities Council
The council advises the governor on issues and trends in providing services to developmentally disabled individuals.
  • Regina Harris, of Seattle, has been reappointed to a term ending June 30, 2004.


Eastern State Hospital Advisory Board
The board monitors the operation and activities of the hospital.
  • John Murphy, of Medical Lake, has been reappointed to a term ending Dec. 5, 2004.


Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board
The board designates strategic freight corridors within the state.
  • Richard Marzano, of University Place, is a commissioner for the Port of Tacoma. He has been appointed to a term ending June 30, 2004.


Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board
The board is a nonprofit organization with the purpose of preventing industrial injuries and occupational diseases among employees in the state.
  • George King, of Spanaway, has been reappointed to a term ending Dec. 31, 2002.


Independent Science Panel
The panel helps ensure that sound science is used in salmon recovery efforts by reviewing salmon recovery plans.
  • Dr. Walter Megahan, of Sequim, is a research hydrologist and research program manager. He has been appointed to a term ending April 30, 2005.


Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Advisory Committee
The committee shall coordinate and provide guidance to Washington's observance of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
  • Phyllis Goldhammer, of Vancouver, Michelle Liberty, of College Place, and William Iyall, of Gig Harbor, have been reappointed to terms ending June 30, 2003.

  • Nabiel Shawa, of Long Beach, Marilyn Skahan-Malatare, of Yakima, and Muff Donohue, of Dayton, have been reappointed to terms ending June 30, 2005.


Marine Employees' Commission
The commission adjusts all complaints, grievances and disputes between labor and management arising out of the operation of the ferry system.
  • John Byrne, of Seattle, is a retired partner of Schwerin, Burns, Campbell and French Law Firm. He has been appointed to a term ending June 15, 2006.


Municipal Research Council
The council assures that Washington cities and towns have a comprehensive research and service program.
  • Bridgeport Mayor Steve Jenkins, has been appointed to fill a partial term ending July 31, 2001. He will serve an additional term that expires July 31, 2003.


Pesticide Incident Reporting and Tracking Review Panel
The panel establishes guidelines for centralizing the receipt of information involving pesticide incidents.
  • Alice Larson, of Vashon Island, has been reappointed to a term ending Jan. 5, 2002.


State Board of Health
The board is the preliminary entity for state health policy development.
  • Vickie Ybarra, of Yakima, Linda Lake, of Kirkland, and Joe Finkbonner, of Ferndale, have been reappointed to terms ending July 2, 2004.

  • Carl Osaki, of Seattle, and Thomas Locke, of Sequim, have been reappointed to terms expiring July 2, 2005.


Washington Commission on National and Community Service
The commission implements federal National and Community Trust Act of 1993.
  • Mary Bass, of Seattle, is the manager of Northwest Community Relations for Bank of America. She has been appointed to a term ending Feb. 15, 2003.

  • Andrew Houghton, of Kirkland, is the director of operations for the Washington State Business Leadership Network. He has been appointed to a term ending Feb. 15, 2004.


Washington State Dental Quality Assurance Commission
The commission regulates the competency and quality of dental professionals by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing qualifications for licensure.
  • Dr. Mark Paxton, of Spokane, is a surgeon with Spokane Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been appointed to a term ending June 30, 2005.

  • Dr. Bernard Nelson, of Spokane, Dr. Laurie Fan, of Renton, and Dr. George McIntyre, of Seattle, have been reappointed to terms ending June 30, 2005.


Washington State Independent Living Advisory Council
The council develops and submits the state plan for independent living.
  • Laura Maudsley, of Bellingham, is program director for the Stillaguamish Tribe. She has been appointed to fill a term expiring Sept. 24, 2003.
