Locke stresses the importance of Washington Reading Corps

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke will be in West Richland Friday, Dec. 18, to address educators, tutors, and community partners who are involved with the successes of local Washington Reading Corps programs.

The governor also will receive a report from each of the 12 area Washington Reading Corps schools outlining progress in student achievement, growth in number of tutors and new community partnerships.

The Washington Reading Corps provides additional support to struggling readers with intensive extra tutoring in reading.

The event will take place at Tapteal Elementary School Gym, 705 N. 62nd Ave. in West Richland from noon – 1:30 p.m.

Locke announced his 1999-2001 budget earlier this week. In his budget, the governor placed education as his top priority by proposing an education package that helps every child succeed in school by hiring new teachers, raising teacher standards, and rewarding achievement by students, teachers and schools. Information on his K-12 budget will be available at the event.

Additional information about the Washington Reading Corps is available on the Internet at the OSPI website.
