Locke names Selecky as acting head of Department of Health

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced Mary C. Selecky of Colville will serve as acting secretary of the state Department of Health while the search for a permanent secretary continues.

Selecky, 51, is the administrator of the Northeast Tri-County Health District, which serves Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens counties.

"I'm pleased that Mary has agreed to lead the Department of Health in its role of looking out for the health of all Washington residents," Locke said.

"The Department of Health deals with a variety of issues that Washington residents face every day," Selecky said. "From monitoring food safety and infectious outbreaks to making sure state and local communities are prepared for communicable diseases, the Department of Health plays a role in pulling it all together to make sure the public is protected."

As part of the governor's executive cabinet, the Department of Health protects people from environmental hazards, such as contaminated drinking water and toxic substances. The agency oversees many programs to prevent and reduce disease and injury, including anti-smoking, nutrition and child safety. It also regulates health care facilities and professions.

The agency has about 1,200 employees and works with a biennial budget of $511 million. DOH has several funding sources, including state general funds ($137 million), federal funds ($269 million), fees ($68 million) and other funds ($37 million).

Selecky will assume her duties Oct. 5. The position pays an annual salary of $96,469.
