Locke appoints to boards and commissions

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced his selections for various boards and commissions, including the Dental Quality Assurance Commission, Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board, Real Estate Commission, Optometry Board, Commission on Pesticide Registration, Commission on National and Community Service, Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission, Washington State Council on Aging, and college boards of trustees.

College Board of Trustees

The board of trustees is the governing body of the college.

Yvonne Sanchez, of Seattle, was appointed to the Seattle Community Colleges, Board of Trustees. Sanchez is the community resource program manager for the Department of Social and Health Services in the Capital Hill Community Service Office. Her term expires Sept. 30, 2001.

Arun G. Jhaveri, of Burien, was appointed to the Highline Community College, Board of Trustees. Jhaveri is the regional technology manager for the U.S. Department of Energy's Seattle Regional Support Office in the Federal Energy Management Program. His term expires Sept. 30, 2003.

Dental Quality Assurance Commission

The commission processes applications for dental licensure; recommends and adopts rules and regulations for administration of the regulatory law; and investigates, reviews, and conducts hearings on alleged violations of the regulatory law.

Robin Reinke, DDS, of Tacoma, owns a private dental practice and is a staff dentist at the Lindquist Clinic for Children, a clinic for low-income children.

Appointed to an additional terms on the commission are: Bryan C. Edgar, DDS, of Federal Way, American Association of Dental Examiners parliamentarian; and Daryl Miller, DDS, of Wenatchee, chairman of the operative committee of the Western Regional Exam Board.

All terms expire June 30, 2002.

Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Board

The board works to prevent industrial injuries and occupational diseases among the employees in the state and to promote the efficient, safe, healthful, and productive operation of industry with the state.

Martin Brown, of Seattle, is a self-employed occupational safety and health consultant. He previously worked as a safety and health specialist for the Department of Labor and Industries. His term expires Dec. 31, 2000.

Real Estate Commission

The commission examines and licenses real estate brokers and salespersons, holds educational conferences, and administers examinations throughout the state.

Appointed to an additional term on the board is Paul Chiles, of Bellevue, president of a local commercial real estate service. His term expires Aug. 14, 2004.

Optometry Board

The board examines candidates for licensure or registration, holds disciplinary hearings, and adopts rules and regulations to promote safety and protect the public welfare.

Ben H. Wong, of Olympia, is an optometric physician with Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute. He previously worked in Oklahoma, serving Native American tribes. His term expires Aug. 18, 2001.
Commission on Pesticide Registration

The commission provides guidance to Washington State University's Food Safety and Environmental Quality Lab in the area of pesticide registrations for minor crops and minor uses and in regard to the availability of pesticides for emergency use.

Appointed to an additional term on the commission is Stephen Michael Carrow, of Richland, former director of agricultural services of Lamb Weston. His term expires Aug. 14, 2001.

Commission on National and Community Service

The commission provides policy and legislative recommendations to expand and promote the ethic of service, and provides leadership with local volunteer organizations, civic and community groups, and local governments to make service a part of the lives of all Washingtonians.

Michael H. Millegan, of Bellevue, is the Northwest area president of GTE Wireless. He serves on the advisory board for Seattle Works Day. His term expires Feb. 15, 2000.

Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission

The commission determines eligibility of candidates for licensure examination or registration; establishes criteria, standards and curricula for approved nursing schools; defines scope of nursing practice; and establishes requirements for continuing nursing education programs.

Shirley Coleman Aikin, of Tacoma, is an assistant professor of physiological nursing at Pacific Lutheran University. She is a member of the American Association of University Women and the Transcultural Nursing Society. Her term expires June 30, 2002.

Washington State Council on Aging

The council advises the governor and Department of Social and Health Services on policies, programs and services affecting older persons.

Miriam Horrigan, of Bellevue, is a member of the Seattle-King County Advisory Council on Aging and Disability and the University of Washington Retirement Association.

Charles Manning, of Vancouver, owns a business in career development and is active in his local homeowners' association.

Thelma Marchand, of Omak, is a teacher and member of the Washington State Indian Education Association and the National Indian Education Association. She is a member of the Confederated Tribe of the Colville Indian Reservation business council.

George Woodriff, of Sequim, is the executive director of the Sequim Senior Center. He is also the director of the local Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

Appointed to additional terms on the board are: William Merifield, of Grapeview, health care consultant to the Department of Veterans Affairs; Judy Petersen, of Soap Lake, working in community relations for long-term care issues; and Phillip Weivoda, of Toppenish, a retired banker.

All terms expire Sept. 15, 2001, except Horrigan, whose term expires Sept. 15, 1999.
