Kolodney to return to post at Information Services

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced that Steve Kolodney, former director of the state Department of Information Services, will return to that post on Oct. 4.

Kolodney left the job June 30 to take a position in private industry in Sacramento, Calif., but recently called Locke to see if he could return.

Kolodney said today, "I missed the challenges at DIS, which is on the cutting edge of information technology in our nation today. There is still much to do at the agency, and I am eager to get back there."

Locke said, "We were in the midst of conducting a nationwide search for Steve's replacement, and it was clear it was not going to be an easy assignment. We are extremely pleased that Steve wants to rejoin us because he did a superb job at DIS."

Under Kolodney's leadership, the Department of Information Services created Access Washington, the state government's home page on the Internet. In April, the site received the Business on The Internet award as the best public service site in the country at Internet World '99.

Washington has won the prestigious Digital State Award two years in a row, beating out the other 49 states, for using information technology to serve taxpayers and deliver government services.

Also, in February of this year, Washington was the only state to receive an "A" grade for information technology in a study by Syracuse University that named Washington one of the four best-managed states in the nation.

Kolodney's annual salary will be $99,362, which is what it would have been had he stayed in the post.
