Locke names Karen Miller to chair Housing Finance Commission

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today named Karen Miller of Mountlake Terrace as chair of the Washington Housing Finance Commission to replace Busse Nutley, who resigned the post to take a position with the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development.

Miller, who has served on the commission since 1997, also was a member of the Snohomish County Council. She chaired the council's law and justice and human services committee, and served on the finance and planning committees. She served as chair of the county council from 1994-95. She also served on the boards of the county's E911 system, the Snohomish County Health District and the Conservation Futures Program Advisory Board.

On the state level, Miller served as president of the Washington State Association of Counties in 1996. She served on the group's board of directors and the legislative steering committee, co-chairing the state Law and Justice Planning Council.

Miller also served four terms on the Edmonds Community College Board, three of those terms as chair. She currently serves as president of the statewide Trustee Association of Community and Technical Colleges. She also has years of service on a variety of local civic and community organizations, including the Mountlake Terrace Planning Commission.

The Housing Finance Commission issues revenue bonds and participates in federal, state and local housing programs to make more funds available to help provide low- to moderate-income housing throughout the state without the use of public funds or lending of the state's credit.

Miller's term on the commission is determined by the governor.
