Locke makes selections for boards and commissions

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced his appointments for two college boards of trustees, the Washington Economic Development Finance Authority, and other boards and commissions.

College Board of Trustees

The board of trustees is the governing body of the college.

Nobie Chan, of Seattle, was appointed to Seattle Community Colleges, Board of Trustees. Chan is the former academic dean of the Edmonds Community College Japan campus. Her term expires Sept. 30, 2004.
John Warring, of Aberdeen, was appointed to Grays Harbor College, Board of Trustees. Warring is the treasurer of the Grays Harbor Economic Development Council. He is also a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 900 board. His term expires Sept. 30, 2004.

Washington Economic Development Finance Authority

The authority helps small and medium-sized businesses meet their capital needs.

Appointed to additional terms on the authority are Scott L. Hardman, of Seattle, chair of the authority and an investment banker; George Pechtel, of Yakima, a general contractor planner; and Diane Welsh, of Spokane, president of Welsh International, Inc.

All terms expire Oct. 19, 2003.

Washington Commission for National and Community Service

The commission provides leadership with local volunteer organizations, civic and community groups, and local governments to make service a part of the lives of all Washingtonians.

Stella Godinez, of Kennewick, is the program director for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She is also a former bilingual legal aid assistant. Her term expires Feb. 15, 2001.

Veronica Gottschalk, of Moses Lake, is a customer service specialist for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. Her term expires Feb. 15, 2002.

Advisory Council for the Blind

The council advises the director of the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind.

Appointed to additional terms on the council are Maria Bradford, of Spokane, telephone solicitor for Multiple Sclerosis Pick-up Service; Jeanne Burke, of Spokane, rehabilitation coordinator for a client assistance program; Denise Colley, of Lacey, program manager of the Northwest Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center; and Margaret Willson, of Seattle, intercultural liaison for businesses conducting international trade.

All terms expire Sept. 13, 2002.

Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee

The committee advises the governor and the director of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs on the needs and concerns of veterans.

Raymond Miller, of Seattle, is a readjustment counseling therapist. He is also a former material management specialist in the U.S. Navy. His term expires July 1, 2001.

Medical Quality Assurance Commission

The commission licenses and regulates the practice of the state's physicians.

Appointed to additional terms on the commission is Juanita Wagner, of Camano Island, president of the Camano Water Association. Her term expires July 1, 2003.

State Independent Living Advisory Council

The council advises and assists the state on issues and policies relating to independent living for individuals with disabilities.

Christina Stateham, of Seattle, is the client programs director for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Stateham is the former special programs director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Her term expires Sept. 24, 2002.

State Board for Volunteer Firefighters and Reserve Officers

The board supervises and administers the volunteer firefighters' and reserve officers' relief and pension act.

Ron Ayres, of Walla Walla, is a fire chief for the Walla Walla County Fire District No. 4. He is also the secretary to the Board of Fire Commissioners. His term expires June 1, 2003.
