Locke makes selections for state boards and commissions

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced his appointments for a college board of trustees, the Northwest Straits Commission, and other boards and commissions.

College Board of Trustees

The board of trustees is the governing body of the college.

Appointed to an additional term on the Eastern Washington University, Board of Trustees is Mark Mays, Ph.D., of Spokane, a psychologist and an attorney. His term expires Sept. 30, 2003.

Northwest Straits Commission

This newly formed commission provides an ecosystem focus on the marine resources of the Northwest Straits.

Andrea E. Copping, Ph.D., of Edmonds, is the assistant director of the Washington Sea Grant Program at the University of Washington. Copping also teaches at the UW School of Marine Affairs. Her term expires Oct. 31, 2003.

James S. Darling, of Bellingham, is the executive director of the Port of Bellingham. He is also the chairman of the Washington Public Ports Association environmental committee. His term expires Oct. 31, 2002.

Duane Fagergren, of Olympia, is the deputy director of the Puget Sound Water Quality Action Team. Fagergren is also a partner and the president of the Calm Cove Oyster Company. His term expires Oct. 31, 2002.

Kathy Fletcher, of Seattle, is the founder and executive director of People for Puget Sound, a citizen organization working to protect and restore the Puget Sound and the Northwest Straits. She also co-chairs the Campaign for the Northwest. Her term expires Oct. 31, 2003.

Board of Registration for Landscape Architects

The board examines candidates for licensure, investigates complaints of violations of landscape architect law and rules, and conducts disciplinary hearings.

John T. Sweitzer, of Spokane, is the owner and president of a land use planning and appraising company. He is also a licensed real estate salesman. His term expires Aug. 5, 2004.

Dental Quality Assurance Commission

The commission processes applications for dental licensure; recommends and adopts rules and regulations for administration of the regulatory law; and investigates, reviews, and conducts hearings on alleged violations of the regulatory law.

Bernard Nelson, of Spokane, is a public administration consultant for the Attorney General of Washington. Nelson is a former regional administrator for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. His term expires June 30, 2001.

Real Estate Commission

The commission examines and licenses real estate brokers and salespersons, holds educational conferences, and administers examinations throughout the state.

Cindy White, of Bellingham, is a real estate broker and owner of an investment property company. She is also a real estate sales instructor. Her term expires Aug. 14, 2005.

Governor's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS

The council advises the governor on state policies on the HIV epidemic.

Appointed to an additional term on the council is Thomas Hooton, M.D., of Seattle, a medical consultant at Harborview Medical Center. His term expires June 30, 2001.
