Locke announces appointments to state boards and commissions

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced his selections for a college board of trustees, the State Advisory Council on Homelessness and other boards and commissions.

College Board of Trustees

The board of trustees is the governing body of the college.

Donald G. Pierce, of Bellingham, was appointed to Whatcom Community Colleges, Board of Trustees. Pierce is the police chief for the City of Bellingham. His term expires Sept. 30, 2004.

State Advisory Council on Homelessness

The council recommends ways to enhance the state's ability to respond to the needs of the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless.

Carma Bailey, of Bothell, is a vice president and manager at Washington Mutual Bank.

Doreen Cato, of Bellevue, is the executive director of First Place, a non-profit company.

Madeline Lewis, of Seattle, is an advertising consultant for a newspaper for the homeless.

David G. Repp, of Colfax, is the auditor for Whitman County.
Georgina Sierra, of Bellevue, is a private practice attorney focusing on family law and criminal defense. She also serves as a judge pro tem in King County Juvenile Court.

Relyn Strom, of Toppenish, is a sales representative for a retail clothing store.

All terms expire Jan. 4, 2004, expect Strom, whose term expires Jan. 4, 2001.

Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee

The committee advises the governor and the director of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs on the needs and concerns of veterans.

Jim Ducker, of Retsil, is a representative of the Washington State Veterans Home. His term expires July 1, 2001.

Washington Technology Center, Board of Directors

The board is the governing body of the Washington Technology Center.

Appointed to an additional term on the board is Kathy Wilcox, of Seattle, the executive director of the Washington Technology Alliance. Her term expires June 11, 2002.

Municipal Research Council

The council provides cities, towns and counties in Washington with a comprehensive research and service program.

Hon. Barbara Harrer, of Harrah, is the mayor of the Town of Harrah. Her term expires July 31, 2001.

Optometry Board

The board examines candidates for licensure or registration, holds disciplinary hearings, and adopts rules and regulations to promote safety and protect the public welfare.

Richard R. Ryan, of Spokane, is a private practice optometric physician and partner at a vision center. He also teaches vision care technology at Spokane Community College.

Appointed to an additional term on the board is Anup Deol, of Mulkiteo, a private practice optometric physician.

Both terms expire Sept. 19, 2002.

Massage Examining Board

The board defines, evaluates, approves, and designates schools, programs and apprenticeship programs; periodically reviews approved schools and programs; determines which states have educational licensing requirements equivalent to Washington; and establishes the standards and procedures for approving courses of study.

Appointed to an additional term on the board is Anni Langsam, of Kirkland, a surgical services assistant at Evergreen Hospital. Her term expires Sept. 7, 2003.
