Locke announces selections for college boards of trustees

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced appointments for several college boards of trustees and other education-related boards and commissions.

College Board of Trustees

The board of trustees is the governing body of the college.

Kevin M. Raymond, of Seattle, was appointed to Western Washington University, Board of Trustees. Raymond is a partner at a law firm providing services to state, local, and special purpose governments.

Marilyn Walton, of Tacoma, was appointed to Tacoma Community College, Board of Trustees. Walton is the manager of equity and diversity programs for Tacoma School District No. 10 and is a member of the Washington Association of School Personnel Administrators.

Kay Harlan, of Tacoma, was appointed to Clover Park Technical College, Board of Trustees. Harlan is president and operations manager of a multi-disciplinary clinic for the learning disabled and is a founding board member of the American Leadership Forum.

Appointed to an additional term on the Bates Technical College, Board of Trustees is Jack G. Skanes, of Puyallup, a retired financial and business officer for the Carpenters' Union Local 470.

Appointed to an additional term on the Cascadia Community College, Board of Trustees is Mark A. Wolfram, of Duvall, general manager of sales, marketing and consulting for Microsoft.

Appointed to an additional term on the Everett Community College, Board of Trustees is Nancy Truitt Pierce, of Monroe, founder and president of a consulting company.

Appointed to an additional term on the Highline Community College College, Board of Trustees is Elizabeth Chen, of Federal Way, homemaker and community volunteer.

Appointed to an additional term on the Peninsula College, Board of Trustees is Barbara Koerber, of Sequim, a former deputy county auditor in Iowa.

Appointed to an additional term on the Renton Technical College, Board of Trustees is James Medzegian, of Newcastle, a retired employee of The Boeing Company.

Appointed to an additional term on the Shoreline Community College, Board of Trustees is Paul Burton, of Lake Forest Park, retired chairman of an electronic equipment company.

Appointed to an additional term on the South Puget Sound Community College, Board of Trustees is Edward Y. Mayeda, of Olympia, retired vice president of a life insurance company.

Appointed to an additional term on the Community Colleges of Spokane, Board of Trustees is Tom McKern, of Rice, self-employed owner and operator in the beef and forestry industries.

Appointed to an additional term on the Walla Walla Community College, Board of Trustees is Mary Grant Tompkins, of Prescott, member of the Walla Walla County Rural Library Board of Directors.

All terms expire Sept. 30, 2004, except Harlan and Raymond, whose terms expire Sept. 30, 2003, and Walton, whose term expires Sept. 30, 2000.

Higher Education Facilities Authority

The authority authorizes the issuance of tax-exempt bonds and loans proceeds to private, non-profit institutions of higher education.

Appointed to an additional term on the authority is Judith A. Butler, of Spokane, member of the Washington Association of Churches. Her term expires March 26, 2003.
State School for the Deaf

The school serves the educational needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students from throughout the state.

Connie Zink, of Vancouver, was appointed to the board of trustees. Zink is vice president of a commercial contracting company and is also a youth program co-leader for Northwest Community Fellowship. Her term expires July 1, 2002.

Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education

The commission places students in professional schools of compact states and provides tuition assistance for out-of-state study.

Appointed to an additional term on the commission is The Honorable Ken Jacobsen, of Seattle, member of the Washington State Senate. His term expires June 9, 2003.

Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board

The board provides planning, coordination, evaluation, monitoring, and policy analysis for the state training system.

Rich Nafziger, of Olympia, has been appointed acting chair of the board. He is an executive policy advisor to the governor. His term is determined by the governor.

Rick S. Bender, of Bothell, is president of the Washington State Labor Council. He also serves on the board of directors for the Washington State Trade and Convention Center. His term expires June 30, 2003.

Donald C. Brunell, of Olympia, is president of the Association of Washington Business. He serves on the Governor's Commission on Early Learning. His term expires June 30, 2001.

Washington Technology Center, Board of Directors

The board is the governing body of the Washington Technology Center.

Valipuram Manoranjan, of Pullman, is chairman of the department of pure and applied mathematics at Washington State University.
Appointed to additional terms on the board are Margaret D. Allen, MD., of Seattle, an associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center; Denice Denton, of Seattle, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Washington; Gary S. Hansen, of Seattle, an associate professor of management and organization at the University of Washington; and David Prieur, D.V.M., of Pullman, chairman of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at the Washington State University.

All terms expire June 11, 2002.

Apprenticeship Training and Coordinating Council

The council approves apprenticeship standards for the various trades, crafts and occupations.

Susan Wilder Crane, of Seattle, is executive director of the Seattle Office of Port JOBS, a non-profit corporation focused on economic and workforce development issues. Her term expires Feb. 21, 2001.
