Bustillo to lead Commission on Asian-Pacific American Affairs

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today named Miebeth Regarde Bustillo of Seattle as the executive director of the Washington Commission on Asian-Pacific American Affairs.

"I am delighted to have Miebeth join my cabinet," Locke said. "She will bring new perspective and energy to the commission, and I look forward to having her become part of our team."

"I welcome this opportunity to use my skills and passion for social, political and economic justice to serve our state's communities in general, and the Asian-Pacific American community in particular," Bustillo said.

Bustillo, 32, currently serves as a policy analyst in the state House of Representatives' Democratic Caucus. She has worked on capital budget items, on higher education issues and related policy areas. She also has worked on education and diversity issues for Microsoft Corp.

She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and a master's degree in public administration from the university's Graduate School of Public Affairs.

The state legislature created the Washington State Commission on Asian American Affairs in 1974. The commission works to develop mutual understanding of public policies and community issues between state government and Asian-Pacific Americans in Washington. The governor appoints the executive director and the 12 members of the commission.

Bustillo replaces David Della, who resigned from the commission in May. She will begin her duties with the commission Sept. 7. The position carries an annual salary of $55,000.
