Locke names Ellen Clark to Spokane County Superior Court

SPOKANE — Gov. Gary Locke today named Ellen Kalama Clark of Spokane to the Spokane County Superior Court.

"Ellen brings an excellent combination of knowledge, experience and temperament to the bench," Locke said. "She is well acquainted with the problems, issues and concerns of cases brought before the court and its judges, and will bring well-reasoned decisions to the courtroom."

Clark, 43, has served as a Spokane County Superior Court commissioner since 1993, presiding over hearings in areas of family law, juvenile offenders, juvenile dependency and domestic violence. Prior to her position as commissioner, she practiced family law in her own law firm in Spokane. Clark earned a bachelor's degree with distinction from the University of Hawaii, and she graduate cum laude from Gonzaga University Law School.

She has held membership in several legal organizations, including the Washington State and Spokane County Bar Associations, the Spokane County Legal Services Center, the Northwest Women's Law Center and the Washington Trial Lawyers Association. Clark also is a member of the Women Helping Women Foundation, the Treatment Alternatives to Street Crimes/Northeast Washington Treatment Alternatives Board of Directors, the Pacific Islander Association and the advisory board for the legal secretary program at Spokane Community College.

Clark will begin her term July 1 and will stand for election this November. The post carries an annual salary of $100,995.
