Governors bet popcorn and hatchery salmon on Rose Bowl

OLYMPIA - An expected Washington Husky win in the Rose Bowl will cost Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon a tub of Hoosier popcorn, Gov. Gary Locke said today.

O'Bannon and Locke made a friendly wager on the outcome of the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl which pits the Purdue University Boilermakers against the Dawgs in Pasadena, Calif.

"Indiana has some of the best and most famous popcorn in the world," Locke said. "So I'm asking Governor O'Bannon to get a tub of it ready to send to Olympia to enjoy during the postgame highlights of the Washington Huskies' victory over Purdue."

O'Bannon agreed to provide the popcorn if Washington wins. But he added, "I'm willing to offer whatever Governor Locke wants in our friendly wager because I'm sure the Boilermakers are going to come home with the trophy."

O'Bannon asked for chinook salmon if Washington loses.

Locke agreed, saying, "In the unlikely event Washington loses, I've offered him a fat, fin-clipped hatchery chinook salmon that we'll put on ice and send over when the fish are running in 2001."

Washington is making its first appearance in the Rose Bowl since 1993.

The Huskies have never played Purdue in the Rose Bowl, but do have a 6-1-1 winning record over the team during regular seasons.

This will be Purdue's first appearance in the Rose Bowl in 34 years.
