Locke flies Children's Memorial Flag in memory of school violence

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today ordered Children's Memorial Flag to be flown at the State Capitol to memorialize children and teenagers who died from violence in the United States during the past year and to prompt the action necessary to stop preventable deaths of children.

"I hope this flag will remind people to think about steps they can take in their own homes and communities to avert the kind of violence we witnessed this week in Colorado," said Locke.

The Children's Memorial Flag Project was started in 1998 by the Child Welfare League of America to coincide with declaration of April as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. Governors of all 50 states were asked to raise the special flag today.
