Volunteers prepare to lend nature a helping hand as Gov. Locke proclaims Saturday Public Lands Day

OLYMPIA - Hundreds of volunteers around the state will be doing everything from cleaning up beaches and parks to leading bird-watching tours this Saturday (Sept. 23).

Gov. Gary Locke has proclaimed Saturday Public Lands Day. Numerous events are planned in Washington to coincide with similar federal and state events around the country.

"We all can be proud of our public lands. They are beautiful and diverse and we should never take them for granted." said Locke. "I encourage people to invest some time on Saturday to lend a hand, learn more about our public lands, or just come out to a state park and enjoy all they have to offer."

The special day is set aside to recognize the importance of public lands. The day's events focus on education about the environment, stewardship of natural resources and improving public lands for outdoor recreation. This is the seventh year for Public Lands Day on a national level.

Special activities are planned in state parks and other designated areas around Washington. People can take part in everything from helping to repair trails at Riverside State Park at Nine Mile Falls to joining a guided bird-watching walk at Tennant Lake in Whatcom County. For specific details on events or to find out how to become involved, call Beverly Isenson with the Governor's Council on Environmental Education at (360) 407-7317.
