Statement by Gov. Gary Locke on allocation of tobacco settlement funds

"I want this to be the last generation of smokers in Washington, and the distribution of $15 million in tobacco settlement money will help us achieve that goal," Gov. Gary Locke announced in response to the allocation plan for those funds, released today.

"The money will be spent on young people, health care and smoking prevention, and that's exactly where it should go. Washington is one of the only states that puts its tobacco settlement money into health care and smoking prevention.

"We also determined with the Attorney General's Office that our communities can best decide how this settlement money should be spent locally to achieve this important goal."
