Gov. Locke's statement on U.S. DOT approval of direct flights by Alaska Airlines between Seattle and Washington, DC

"I applaud today's decision by the U.S. Department of Transportation to grant Alaska Airlines' application to provide nonstop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

"Earlier this year, I wrote a letter to and spoke with U.S. DOT Secretary Norman Mineta in support of Alaska Airlines' application. I strongly supported the application because I believed that additional links between the nation's capital and the Seattle-area would provide economic benefits to this region and would stimulate fare competition for flights between the two regions.

"Today's decision by the U.S. DOT brings our two Washingtons closer together.

"I look forward to someday flying on Alaska Airlines between Seattle-Tacoma and Washington, DC."
