Locke picks Leichner as acting State Patrol chief

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today named Robert Leichner as the acting chief of the Washington State Patrol.

Leichner currently serves as the Patrol's assistant chief to Chief Annette Sandberg, who is resigning as of Feb. 5 after six years of service.

"Assistant Chief Leichner is a very experienced officer and will provide a steady hand at this key state agency while we conduct a nationwide search for a permanent replacement for Chief Sandberg," Locke said.

Leichner commented, "I am honored and privileged to lead the men and women of the State Patrol. It is an outstanding organization with an immense amount of talent and dedication. I look forward to furthering the positive direction of the agency."

Leichner, 52, is a 27-year veteran of the Patrol. He began his career as a trooper in Goldendale. He served in a number of key positions, including as commander of the Crime Laboratory and as assistant commander of the Commercial Vehicle Division.

He received his master's of public administration degree from Eastern Washington University in 1993 and a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1971.

He also graduated from the FBI National Academy.

Leichner has received several professional awards, including the Governor's Distinguished Management Leadership Award in 1994.

As acting chief, Leichner will earn $99,362 per year.
