Washington rated above average for fiscal management

OLYMPIA - Washington state ranks among the top four states for overall fiscal management, according to the Cato Institute.

Washington tied with one other state for fourth place, receiving a B grade. This reflects an increase of 10 points over the institute's last report card on each state's fiscal performance, two years ago.

"The grade shows how this administration and this state are constantly striving toward fiscal responsibility," Gov. Gary Locke said about Washington's ranking. "Washington citizens deserve a financially prudent government."

According to the Cato Institute, the states with the most fiscally conservative records received the highest grades. The lowest grades went to the states with the most increased spending and tax hikes.

Locke added, "Our objective for the next fiscal report card is, of course, to earn an A grade. We will keep working toward that goal."
