Gov. Gary Locke’s Statement on Puget Sound Oil Spill

OLYMPIA – Oct. 14, 2004 – Gov. Gary Locke issued the following statement on today’s oil spill in Puget Sound:

“The situation continues to evolve and we are monitoring it very closely.

“The U.S. Coast Guard and the state Department of Ecology continue to do everything in their power to contain and clean up the spill. Crews were ready at daybreak to assess the damage, however heavy fog prevented them from getting onto the water and into the air until later in the morning.

“The Coast Guard and Ecology will continue to vigorously investigate the source of the spill and make every effort to find out who is responsible for it.

“The unique and important ecosystems in the Puget Sound are particularly vulnerable to damage from oil spills. That’s why the state has a comprehensive response program in place to try to prevent spills and minimize the damage when they occur.”
