Gov. Gary Locke’s Statement on Grocery Worker Contract Vote

Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement on the contract that has now been ratified by Puget Sound-area grocers and unions representing thousands of grocery store employees:

“It’s great news that both sides were able to reach an agreement. I applaud everyone involved for working hard on the tough issues and averting a strike that would have hurt workers, their families, the grocery store chains and the area’s economy. It was imperative to avoid the disastrous strike that happened in California, which severely affected both sides.

“We’re hopeful that the grocers and the union representing grocery store employees in Pierce and Thurston counties can also reach an agreement soon.”
