Gov. Gary Locke Announces Appointments to Boards and Commissions

Gov. Gary Locke today announced the following appointments to state boards and commissions:

Fish & Wildlife Commission

Dr. Pete Schroeder of Sequim has been appointed to a term ending Dec. 31, 2006. Schroeder is a marine mammal veterinary consultant. The Fish & Wildlife Commission establishes policies and regulations designed to preserve, protect and perpetuate the fish and wildlife of the state, as well as fish and game habitat.

Gorge Commission

Harold Abbe of Camas has been appointed to a term ending June 12, 2008. The Gorge Commission was established by the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area Act to ensure that the character of the Columbia River Gorge is maintained over time. The purposes of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act are to protect and enhance the scenic, natural, cultural and recreational resources of the Columbia River Gorge, and support the economy of the area by encouraging growth to occur in urban areas and allowing economic development consistent with resource protection.

Hispanic Affairs Commission

Homero Tamez of Pasco has been reappointed to a term ending Aug. 1, 2007. The Hispanic Affairs Commission ensures that state programs are providing the assistance needed by the Hispanic community; advises state agencies on developing and implementing policies; and plans programs focusing on the needs of the Hispanic Community.

Pipeline Safety Committee

Chuck Mosher of East Wenatchee has been reappointed to a term ending July 31, 2005. The Pipeline Safety Committee advises the Utilities and Transportation Commission and other appropriate federal, state and local government agencies and officials on matters relating to hazardous liquid and gas pipeline safety, routing construction, operation, and maintenance. The committee reviews and comments on proposed rules and on the operation of the state pipeline safety program.

Professional Educator Standards Board

Tim Knue of Mt. Vernon has been reappointed to a term ending May 31, 2006. The Professional Educator Standards Board advises state policymakers on issues related to the preparation, certification and ongoing professional development of educators in Washington state and administers the basic skills and subject knowledge tests required for teacher certification and the state’s alternative routes to teaching program.

Sentencing Guidelines Commission

Edward “Ned” Delmore of Poulsbo, James Nagle of Walla Walla and David Boerner of Enumclaw have been reappointed to terms ending Aug. 2, 2007. The Sentencing Guidelines Commission evaluates state sentencing policy for both the adult criminal justice system and the juvenile justice system. The commission recommends standard sentences for felony offenses; studies sentencing practices across the state; studies the criminal code and makes recommendations for modification.
