Gov. Gary Locke's Statement on Death of Washington National Guard Soldier

Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement on the death of Sergeant Jeffrey R. Shaver, a soldier from the Washington National Guard’s 81st Armored Brigade:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sergeant Jeffrey R. Shaver, a soldier from the Washington National Guard’s 81st Armored Brigade. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Shaver’s family and his fiancée on their profound loss.

“Washington National Guard members are our friends and neighbors. They are firefighters, farmers, business owners, grocery clerks, doctors, lawyers and others from all walks of life. They are volunteers who train on weekends to respond to state emergencies and they are a key part of our nation’s armed forces. The loss of Sgt. Shaver, who previously worked at a vocational college helping graduates find jobs, is tragic. We must pray for the safety of all Americans as the war in Iraq continues.”
