Joining Locke at the event were U.S. Congressman Norm Dicks; Billy Frank, Jr., chairman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission; Jeff Koenings, director of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife; Lars Mobrand, chair of the Hatchery Science Review Group; Jim Waldo, the governor’s advisor on water policy; and Barbara Cairns, executive director of Long Live the Kings, a private, nonprofit organization committed to restoring wild salmon to the waters of the Pacific Northwest.
“The release of this landmark report is a remarkable accomplishment,” Locke said. “I applaud the Hatchery Scientific Review Group, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Treaty Tribal governments, federal agency partners, and Long Live the Kings for their leadership and dedication to this project. This report will be the blueprint for future investments in the state hatchery systems.”
The release of the principles and recommendations of the Hatchery Scientific Review Group marks the culmination of four years of intensive scientific inquiry, examination and recommendations for reform of the Puget Sound and coastal Washington hatchery system.
“Hatchery reform is a critical piece of salmon recovery,” Locke said. “Because of its importance, I put $8 million for implementation of hatchery reform into the state’s budget last year, and state lawmakers approved it. The strong bi-partisan support for hatchery reform, during one of the most difficult budget cycles in recent memory, is a testament to the effectiveness of the Hatchery Reform Project.”
