State Employees Rank in Top Five Nationally for Generosity

State employees and public agency retirees reaffirmed their commitment to giving, not only through their usual work effort, but also by giving back to their communities and the causes they believe in.

Employees and public agency retirees demonstrated their greatest level of generosity yet by contributing in excess of $5.1 million to non-profit agencies locally and around the world through the Combined Fund Drive (CFD), Washington State employees’ charitable giving program.

Washington state employees became only the fifth state program in the nation to surpass $5 million in donations. Washington employees also ranked first among states of a similar size.

“I am delighted that state employees pledged more than $5 million this year to help their communities,” Gov. Gary Locke said. “Reaching this milestone is a testament to the generosity of state employees and retirees in Washington.”

These contributions will be distributed to the employee-designated charities quarterly throughout 2004. The employee volunteers at each state office make the CFD campaign a success by educating their colleagues about the benefits of giving through payroll deduction and using the workplace giving program.

The 2004 campaign, which will begin in September, will be the 20th anniversary of the Combined Fund Drive. The campaign has generated more than $67 million since the program’s inception.
