Gov. Gary Locke Appoints New Executive Director of Commission on African American Affairs

Gov. Gary Locke has appointed Regina J. Jones as the executive director of the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs.

Jones most recently served on the national board of directors for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She previously worked as a consultant on business, public policy and diversity projects. She has also served in state government as legal counsel to the Judiciary Committee in the state House of Representatives and as an executive policy analyst for issues such as civil rights for Gov. Booth Gardner.

“Regina’s experience in both the public and private sectors on issues of diversity and inclusion will be a tremendous asset to the Commission on African American Affairs,” Locke said. “She will provide strong leadership on issues of importance for African Americans.”

The Commission on African American Affairs encourages the development and implementation of policies, programs and practices that are specifically intended to improve conditions affecting the cultural, social, economic, political, educational, health and general well-being of African American people at all levels throughout Washington state.

“I am delighted and honored to be appointed executive director of the Washington Commission on African American Affairs,” Jones said. “I look forward to working with the commissioners, the community, the governor and the Legislature in furthering the agency’s mission. I am excited to renew existing relationships and begin new collaborations to address a broad range of public policy issues affecting African Americans in Washington state.”

Victoria Woodards, chair of the commission, said, “We are looking forward to working with Regina and believe she will do a great job energizing the commission. She will be a great addition to our team.”

Jones received her law degree from the University of Washington and earned her bachelor’s degree in political science at Stanford University. She recently completed professional mediation training from the University of Washington Law School.

Jones begins her appointment Jan. 12. She will be paid an annual salary of $56,000.
