“No matter what you want to do when you grow up, you have to start by being a good reader,” Locke told the students. “Reading is the key to all academic success. I am so proud of all the progress students at Stevens have made in reading.”
Stevens Elementary is a Washington Reading Corps school. Fourth grade students at Stevens have scored above the state average in reading, writing and mathematics on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). Nearly 82 percent of the students at Stevens participate in the state’s free or reduced price lunch program.
“There is an exciting energy about reading here at Stevens that can be attributed to the dedication of wonderful teachers, administrators and parents all focused on making sure each of you learns to read,” Bergeson told the students. “Reading is not only fun, but it opens up doors to a bright future. I am so impressed with how well you are doing.”
Miss Washington 2003 Fianna Dickson also attended the event to talk about the importance of reading.
Locke and Bergeson also read “Kiss Good Night” by Amy Hest and Anita Jeram to an all-school assembly and presented an autographed copy of the book to the school librarian.
The governor and the superintendent started the “Reading School of the Month” program in January 2002 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and learn how struggling schools made drastic changes to become exemplary reading schools.

Gov. Gary Locke, Superintendent of Public Instruction Honor Aberdeen School as December ‘Reading School of the Month’
Gov. Gary Locke and Terry Bergeson, state superintendent of public instruction, today presented Stevens Elementary School in Aberdeen with the Washington “Reading School of the Month” award for December 2003.“No matter what you want to do when you grow up, you have to start by being a good reader,” Locke told the students. “Reading is the key to all academic success.
