Gov. Gary Locke Appoints Margaret Sowards to Kittitas County Superior Court

Gov. Gary Locke today appointed Margaret Sowards to the Kittitas County Superior Court.

Sowards’ appointment is to a new superior court position authorized by Kittitas County and the Legislature. This position was created to help handle rising caseloads.

“I am pleased to appoint Margaret to the Kittitas County Superior Court,” Locke said. “She has the expertise, legal skills and experience needed to effectively serve as a Superior Court judge.”

Sowards is currently senior deputy prosecuting attorney for Kittitas County. She is one of two prosecutors handling felony cases. She is also a member of the Ellensburg City Council.

Sowards previously served in the offices of the Seattle City Attorney and the Pierce County Prosecutor. She also worked in private practice, focusing on civil litigation.

“I appreciate the trust and confidence of Governor Locke in this appointment,” Sowards said. “I intend to serve in a fair and impartial manner worthy of the respect and honor that is placed upon this judicial office.”

Sowards received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Claremont McKenna College. She graduated from the University of Puget Sound School of Law and was admitted to the Washington Bar in 1993.
