Gov. Gary Locke Tours Naval Facilities, Meets with Personnel

Gov. Gary Locke today toured some of the state’s Naval installations to view firsthand the modern facilities and take time to speak with Naval personnel before the holidays.

The governor stopped at the Naval station in Bremerton and also viewed the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard/Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility before touring the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Keyport and the Submarine Base Bangor in Silverdale.

“The Navy’s efforts in the Northwest region are vital to the safety and security of our country and the world,” Locke said. “I am proud of the dedicated men and women who work here and their contributions to Kitsap County and our state.”

Rear Adm. L.R. Hering and Rear Adm. Melvin Williams, commander of Submarine Group 9, joined Locke on the tour.

“It is great to have the governor visit, meet with our people and see what happens here,” Hering said. “These visits serve as an important reminder of our dedicated, talented people and the work being done in support of the Pacific Fleet.”

Naval Station Bremerton is home port for the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and several supply ships. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard is the largest Naval shipyard in the Pacific Northwest and continues to design, build, operate and modernize ships in the Naval fleet.

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Keyport has a tradition of technical expertise in the world of undersea warfare. The center provides testing, training and evaluation services, including the maintenance of fleet material readiness programs.

Submarine Base Bangor serves the Navy as a home port for the TRIDENT Ballistic Missile Submarine Program. Their primary mission is to provide support for the TRIDENT submarine force and other Navy activities.
