Gov. Gary Locke Praises Sustainability Practices at Fort Lewis, Calls for Continued Efforts Statewide

Gov. Gary Locke today praised Ft. Lewis as the model for sustainability programs statewide and called for further efforts to move Washington toward sustainability.

“As leaders in this effort, you are all setting a sterling example for other bases around the country,” Locke said in an address before military leaders at Sustainability Education Day held at Fort Lewis. “Washington state government, the private sector, communities and citizens have much to learn from your efforts. You are leading the way, and making Washington a better state with a brighter future.”

The governor highlighted the state’s aggressive stance on global warming, purchase of more than 200 hybrid vehicles with low emissions and high fuel efficiency, and improved energy efficiency in schools, universities, colleges and public buildings.

The governor reminded all in attendance to renew their dedication and sense of purpose to sustainability efforts.

“I urge you all to continue to dedicate yourselves to this vital effort. Let’s keep up – and step up – the good work at all bases and communities. Together we can sustain a healthy America and a Washington that will always be a great place to live, work and raise a family,” he said.

Last year, the newly created Governor’s Sustainable Washington Advisory Panel examined ways of using human, environmental and economic resources more wisely, including the use of energy-efficient products, recycled materials and conservation programs.

In September 2002, Locke signed an executive order directing state agencies to establish sustainability objectives and prepare biennial plans to modify their practices. The executive order’s long-term goals include shifting to clean energy, reducing waste, purchasing non-toxic and recycled products and raising awareness about sustainable practices in the workplace.
