Gov. Gary Locke Announces Appointments to Boards and Commissions

Gov. Gary Locke today announced the appointments of James Kelly of Seattle to the Academic Achievement and Accountability Commission, Derek Kilmer of Gig Harbor to the Tacoma Community College Board of Trustees and Robert Mead of Eatonville to the Horse Racing Commission.

Kelly will serve on the Academic Achievement and Accountability Commission (A+ Commission) for a term ending June 30, 2007. Kelly is the president and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. He has also served as deputy assistant secretary for the Economic Services Administration and special assistant to the secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services. The A+ Commission provides oversight of the state’s K-12 educational accountability system.

Kilmer will serve on the Tacoma Community College Board of Trustees for a term ending Sept. 30, 2006. Kilmer currently works as business retention manager for the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County. He is the vice chair and board member of the Communities in Schools of Peninsula and a board member of the Gig Harbor - Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce, and this fall he will complete his Ph.D. in comparative social policy from the University of Oxford in Oxford, United Kingdom.

Mead will serve on the Horse Racing Commission (HRC) for a term ending Jan. 17, 2005. Mead recently served as the state veterinarian in the Washington Department of Agriculture, a position he held for 15 years. He previously worked as assistant state veterinarian and in private equine practice. The HRC provides a regulatory foundation for all aspects of horse racing in order to protect the public and assure the overall health of the industry.
