Gov. Gary Locke Appoints Al Nielson to Tri-County Superior Court

Gov. Gary Locke today appointed Stevens County Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Al Nielson to the Tri-County Judicial District Superior Court, serving Stevens, Ferry and Pend Oreille counties.

“I am pleased to add Al to a branch of government that is so important to our democratic system,” Locke said. “Al has the legal skills and experience needed to effectively serve as a Superior Court judge.”

Nielson has more than 20 years of legal experience. He began his career in private practice and was elected Ferry County prosecuting attorney in 1983. He then moved to Stevens County in 1998, where he has been the chief criminal deputy prosecuting attorney.

“I appreciate this appointment and view it as an opportunity to serve the public,” Nielson said.

Nielson received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Utah and his law degree from Gonzaga University. He was admitted to the Washington Bar in 1978.
Nielson will replace retiring Judge Larry Kristianson who has served on the bench since 1982. “We thank Judge Kristianson for his years of service to the Tri County Superior Court,” Locke said.
