Gov. Gary Locke Calls Immediate Second Special Session, Urges Legislature to Complete Important Business

OLYMPIA – June 11, 2003 – Gov. Gary Locke early this morning called the Legislature back for a second special session, effective immediately following adjournment of the first special session, to complete the people’s business. Tuesday, June 10, marked the final day of the 30-day special legislative session that began on Monday, May 12.

Locke wants the Legislature to pass his tax incentives package for the aerospace industry as well as unemployment insurance and injured workers’ compensation reform – issues that are key to the state’s proposal to win final assembly of the Boeing 7E7. The governor ordered the second special session to begin immediately so that these issues may be resolved before the state submits its bid to Boeing on Friday, June 20.

The governor issued the following statement on calling the second special session:

“I commend the Legislature on what it has done so far, but we still must address the critical issues that will affect the future of our state.

“These measures are imperative to our economic development and recovery.

“I urge swift passage of this legislation as part of the state’s unified effort to win final assembly of the Boeing 7E7. Now is the time for action.”
