Locke selects Mundy as commissioner of Employment Security

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke has selected Dr. Sylvia Mundy as the new commissioner of Employment Security.

Mundy replaces former commissioner Carver Gayton who retired after serving as commissioner for four years.

In announcing the appointment, Locke called Mundy the ideal person for this position, with strong public and private sector experience in human resources, fiscal management and administrative skills.

"Sylvia Mundy brings more than two decades worth of experience and talent vital to this job," Locke said. "Her background in management and leadership is exactly what this organization of more than 2,000 people needs. As the head of the largest employment agency in the state, we need someone who can oversee the job placement of hundreds of thousands of people."

Mundy said, "I am very excited to step into this position and this opportunity. I am committed to the continued movement of this department in a positive direction."

Mundy's objectives include maintaining the agency's leadership in the state's Workforce Development System, as well as efficiently moving people into meaningful jobs with career potential.

Mundy steps into this position with extensive experience in management and employee relations. She was the president and CEO of a company that owned, operated and marketed several restaurant franchises.

Most recently, Mundy worked as the director of the Center for Business and Industry at Virginia Highlands Community College, where she oversaw the development of the program.

Mundy begins her job on May 14 at an annual salary of $105,000.
