Gov. Gary Locke Announces Board Appointments for Higher Education

Gov. Gary Locke today announced the recent appointments of Chris Marr of Spokane to the Washington State University Board of Regents, Phil Sharpe and Peggy Zoro both of Bellingham to the Western Washington University Board of Trustees and Craig W. Cole of Bellingham to the University of Washington Board of Regents.

Chris Marr of Spokane will serve a term of office through Sept. 30, 2009 on the Washington State University Board of Regents. Marr serves on a number of boards in the Spokane community and is currently the city’s Chairman of the Regional Chamber of Commerce. He is also a current member and past chair of the Washington Transportation Commission.

Phil Sharpe from Bellingham will serve on the Western Washington University Board of Trustees for a term ending Sept. 30, 2006. Sharpe has served on the Board of Trustees at Whatcom Community College and co-chaired the Bellingham School District bond campaign, which raised $30 million to remodel Bellingham High School. He also served as special counsel to the United States Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources chaired by Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).

Peggy Zoro of Bellingham will serve on the Western Washington University Board of Trustees for a term ending Sept. 30, 2008. Zoro is currently the senior vice president and regional manager for Whidbey Island Bank. She received the Bellingham Public School Foundation Award of Distinguished Community Volunteer and the Bellingham/Whatcom Economic Development Council Outstanding Service Award in 2002.

Craig W. Cole from Bellingham will serve on the University of Washington Board of Regents for a term ending Sept. 30, 2007. Cole is currently the President/CEO of Brown & Cole Stores, the oldest grocery company in the Pacific Northwest. Named Citizen of the Year for his public service by the Whatcom County Board of Realtors, Cole has served as a local elected official and has received several assignments from past governors including serving on the Board of Trustees of Western Washington University and the Governor's Commission on Early Learning.
